Hello, my name is Bob Larsen, and I am a health-care-reform specialist who can help you understand and prepare for the changes that Obamacare laws are making. Whether you are looking for an individual policy or a group plan for your business, I can help you understand the issues so that you can make the best choice possible.

What’s the difference between Health Care Reform, the Affordable Care Act, PPACA and Obamacare?
There is no difference. “Health Care Reform”, “the Affordable Care Act”, “PPACA” and “Obamacare” are different ways of referring to health care reform.

However, what is confusing is trying to separate what is actually law and what is political rhetoric. Obamacare is such a politically-hot issue, it may be difficult for you to know which headlines you need to be concerned with and which ones you don’t.

I can help you understand what you need to know about the changing laws that affect you now, and the changes that will affect you in the near future.

What Kind of Health-Care-Reform Changes Can I Expect in 2014?
Beginning January 1, 2014, the Affordable Care Act requires all Americans to have minimum essential coverage, qualify for an exception, or pay a tax penalty. The penalties are phased-in and range from as little as $95 per year, up to as much as $2085 or 2.5% of household income, whichever is greater.

Penalty Schedule 2014 – 2016 and Beyond
2014: $95 per uninsured adult and $47.50 per uninsured child (capped at $285 per household) or 1% of the household income, whichever is greater.

2015: $325 per uninsured adult and $162.50 per uninsured child (capped at $975 per household) or 2% of the household income, whichever is greater.

2016 and beyond: $695 per uninsured adult and $347.50 per uninsured child (capped at $2,085 per household) or 2.5% of the household income, whichever is greater.

To avoid these penalties, it is important that you begin evaluating your health-care needs and all the potential health-care plans and providers as soon as possible. Waiting could be a costly mistake.

What is Minimum Essential Coverage?
“Minimum essential coverage” is basic medical coverage—health insurance—which can be provided by:

  • • An employer
  • • The government (Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, TRICARE, VA, etc.)
  • • An individual policy

As stated above, on January 1, 2014, the Affordable Care Act will start to phase-in a penalty for those individuals who do not have “minimum essential coverage”. Now is the time to make sure that whatever policy or plan you have meets the minimum-essential-coverage requirement to avoid any penalties.

You may be surprised to find which policies do qualify and which do not! But those are easy questions I can help you with.

What Are Health-Insurance Exchanges or Marketplaces?
A health-insurance exchange or marketplace is a marketplace that individual states are setting up to make it easier for individuals and small businesses to compare health insurance plans and companies; However, making sure you are comparing apples to apples, and getting the most for your dollar, may be a daunting task.

The shear amount of companies, policies and options available might be confusing and make a very important decision difficult to make. I can also help you navigate the exchanges to find the best companies, plans and options possible.
